How to hang paste-the-wall wallpaper: a beginner's guide
Everything you need, step by step – no pasting table required.
Non-woven, paste-the-wall papers are the friendliest way to start decorating. You paste the wall, not the paper, so there is no soaking time and no stretching.
You will need
- Ready-mixed paste for non-woven papers and a roller
- Spirit level or plumb line, pencil
- Sharp snap-off knife and a wide filling knife
- Smoothing brush or plastic smoother, sponge and clean water
Prepare the wall
Walls should be smooth, clean and dry. Fill cracks, sand, and prime new plaster with a diluted size or primer.
Hang the first drop
Draw a vertical line with a level about 50 cm from a corner. Paste the wall slightly wider than one drop, then offer the paper up to the line with a little overlap at ceiling and skirting. Smooth from the centre outwards.
Match and repeat
Paste the next section and butt the next drop tightly against the first, sliding it to match the pattern. Trim top and bottom with a sharp blade against a filling knife. Wipe paste off the surface straight away.
Tip: order a free sample first to check colour and scale in your own light.
