How to measure for wallpaper (and never run out)

A simple, step-by-step method for working out how many rolls you need – including pattern repeat.

Running out of wallpaper halfway up the last wall is every decorator's nightmare – and because rolls are printed in batches, ordering more later can mean a slight colour difference. Here is the method we use.

1. Measure the width of every wall

Use a steel tape and measure each wall at its widest point. Include the space above doors and windows for now; on most walls it is simpler to paper straight across and trim later. Add the widths together.

2. Measure the height

Measure from the top of the skirting board to the ceiling or coving in several places – older homes are rarely level. Use the largest figure.

3. Allow for the pattern repeat

Every design lists its repeat (for example 53 cm). Each drop must be long enough to match the pattern to its neighbour, so add the repeat plus 10 cm for trimming to your height. That figure is your drop length.

4. Do the maths

Our rolls are 52 cm wide and 10 m long. Divide 1,000 cm by your drop length and round down – that is how many drops you get per roll. Divide your total wall width by 52 and round up – that is how many drops you need. Divide drops needed by drops per roll and round up.

5. Add one for luck

We always suggest a spare roll for future repairs. Or skip the arithmetic entirely: the calculator on every product page does it for you, and our Design Your Own tool prices made-to-measure panels to the exact size of your wall.
