Wallpaper FAQs

Quick answer

Short, direct answers to the questions we are asked most, with links to full guides.

Questions & answers

Do I paste the wall or the paper?

For non-woven paste-the-wall papers like ours you paste the wall. Traditional paper-backed wallpapers are pasted on the back and left to soak; non-woven ones are not.

Where should I start hanging wallpaper?

Start at the focal point and work outwards, or start next to a window or door frame and work away from the light so any butt joints cast less shadow.

How long should wallpaper dry before I touch it?

Leave it to dry naturally at normal room temperature – follow your adhesive manufacturer's instructions and avoid heating the room rapidly.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

For most rooms, no – paper straight across and trim. The offcuts are rarely long enough to reuse because of the pattern repeat, so subtracting openings often leaves you short.

Why does the pattern repeat matter?

Each drop must start at the same point in the pattern as its neighbour, so you lose up to one repeat per drop. Bigger repeats mean fewer drops per roll.

Is non-woven wallpaper easy to remove?

Yes. Non-woven papers are designed to be dry-strippable: they peel away in full lengths, usually leaving the wall ready to redecorate.

Can I paper over old wallpaper?

It is not recommended. New paste can lift the old layer and seams can show through. Strip back to a sound surface first.

Do I need a steamer?

Only for stubborn, multiple or painted-over layers. Many papers come away with water and a scraper.

Can I paste the paper on a paste-the-wall wallpaper?

You can, but there is no benefit and it is messier. Follow the instructions on the roll label.

Is paste-the-wall wallpaper more expensive?

Price depends on the paper quality and print. Our Standard, Premium and Luxe papers are all paste-the-wall.

Does peel-and-stick wallpaper damage walls?

It can lift paint, particularly fresh or poor-quality emulsion. Always test a small area.

Do you sell peel-and-stick wallpaper?

No. All of our designs are printed on paste-the-wall non-woven papers.

Is wallpaper back in fashion?

Feature walls and fully papered rooms are both good ways to use pattern. Choose what you love rather than what is fashionable.

Can I paint over wallpaper?

It is possible on some papers but not recommended for patterned designs – it is usually better to strip and repaint.

Is non-woven wallpaper breathable?

Non-woven papers are generally more breathable than solid vinyl, which helps in older homes. Ventilation is still important.

Which wallpaper is best for a bathroom?

A scrubbable paper in a well-ventilated room, kept away from direct water. Our Premium or Luxe papers are suitable.

Can I order samples on different papers?

Order a free A4 sample of any design to check colour and scale before you choose a paper.

Which paper hides uneven walls best?

Textured and heavier papers – Premium and Luxe – are more forgiving than smooth Standard.

Are labour costs included in your prices?

No – our prices are for the wallpaper only. Hanging is arranged with your own decorator.

Do I need to buy a spare roll?

We recommend one spare for future repairs; make sure rolls come from the same print batch.

Should I match the pattern above a door?

Yes – the short pieces above doors and windows should continue the pattern from the drops either side. Cut them from the same roll in sequence.

Do I need to turn off the electricity?

Yes. Isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before loosening any faceplate.

Can I use metallic-effect wallpaper near sockets?

Our metallic looks are printed effects, but always keep wet paste away from electrical fittings.

Why do I need a new plumb line after a corner?

Corners are rarely perfectly vertical. Restarting from a plumb line keeps the next wall straight.

Is wallpapering a ceiling hard?

It is harder than walls because you are working overhead. A non-woven paste-the-wall paper is lighter and easier to handle.

Should I paper the walls and ceiling?

In small rooms like cloakrooms, papering both in the same design creates a cocooning, jewel-box effect.

How do I work out rolls for a stairwell?

Measure the height of the longest drop and the total width, then calculate as normal using the longest drop. Order a spare – long drops create more waste.

Which wallpaper is best for a hallway?

A scrubbable paper with a pattern that hides scuffs; our Premium paper is scrubbable.

What is sizing?

Sizing means sealing a porous wall with a diluted paste or a size product so the adhesive does not soak in and the paper can slide into position.

Do I need lining paper under non-woven wallpaper?

Not on sound, smooth walls. It helps on walls with patchy repairs, hairline cracks or mixed surfaces.

Why is my wallpaper bubbling?

Usually trapped air, too little paste, or paste applied unevenly. Smooth from the centre outwards when hanging.

Why are my seams showing gaps?

Paper may have been stretched, the wall may be too absorbent, or the room dried too quickly. Non-woven papers minimise shrinkage.

Does dark wallpaper make a room look smaller?

Not necessarily – dark walls make corners recede, so small rooms can feel more enveloping rather than smaller.

Should I use vertical stripes in a small room?

Vertical stripes can make a ceiling feel taller.

Is paste-the-wall wallpaper renter friendly?

It is easier to remove than traditional paper because it dry strips, but you still need permission.

Can I use peel-and-stick instead?

You could, but it can lift paint on removal – test first and still check your agreement.

How many rolls do I need for a feature wall?

A typical 3.5 m × 2.4 m wall needs 3 rolls with a 53 cm repeat. See our roll guides for other sizes.

Is a feature wall outdated?

A single papered wall is still a practical way to introduce pattern without committing to a whole room.

How are mural panels hung?

Like standard wallpaper – paste the wall and hang panels in numbered order.

Can I design my own mural?

Yes – upload your own artwork or customise a design in Design Your Own.

Will wallpaper peel in a bathroom?

Poor ventilation and direct water are the main causes. Ventilate well and avoid splash zones.

Which patterns suit bathrooms?

Marble, Moroccan tile effects, botanicals and tropical prints are popular.

Can wallpaper be used in a nursery?

Yes. Decorate well before the baby arrives and ventilate the room.

What is the best paper for kids' rooms?

Premium is scrubbable, which helps with crayon and sticky fingers.

What colour wallpaper makes a room look bigger?

Pale, warm grounds reflect light, but dark grounds can also make corners recede.

Do you have a colour quiz?

Yes – try our Find your wallpaper colour quiz.

Do large patterns suit small rooms?

They can – a large pattern in a small room is dramatic. Make sure at least one full motif is visible.

How do I know which match my wallpaper has?

Check the specification on the product page – it shows the match and repeat.

Are samples free?

Yes – free A4 samples are available on every design.

How many samples can I order?

Up to 10 free samples per order.

Is the preview accurate?

It is a guide to scale and overall effect; colour depends on your screen, so confirm with a sample.

What is the 2027 wallpaper trend?

See our separate 2027 trends article in the blog.

Should I follow trends?

Choose what you will love for years; trends are a starting point.

Should I order extra?

One spare roll is recommended for repairs.

Can I return unused rolls?

Rolls are printed to order – check our terms before ordering.

How many rolls for a chimney breast?

A 1.5 m wide breast plus two 30 cm returns, 2.4 m high, usually needs 2 rolls with a 53 cm repeat.

What file should I upload?

A high-resolution image works best; larger walls need higher resolution.

Can I recolour any design?

Yes – open any design and choose Customise colours & scale.

What colour wallpaper suits a dark room?

Either warm pale tones to reflect light, or rich darks to create a cosy mood.

Do vertical stripes make a ceiling look higher?

Yes, they lead the eye up, which is why stripes are a classic choice for cottages.
